Celebrate World Prematurity Day – Go Purple
World Prematurity Day on 17 November is one of the most important days in the year to raise awareness of the challenges and burden of preterm birth globally. Individuals and organisations from more than 100 countries join forces on this Day to help address preterm birth and improve the situation of preterm babies and their families.
Each year Worldwide 15 million babies are born too soon. Approximately 27,000 of these babies are born in Australia. We want everyone to honour the 15 million babies who struggled to survive this year and the nearly 1 million babies who sadly lost their fight for life. Prematurity and complications from an early birth is also now the number one cause of death for children under 5 and a leading cause of neurological impairment.
In Australia we ask people to join us to raise awareness of this global problem. Show your support by wearing purple. Ask parents of preterm infants to share their stories on Facebook, including on www.facebook.com/WorldPrematurityDayAustralia/. Light a candle at 7 pm on the 17th to honour and remember all prems.
Landmarks around Australia and the World will be lit up purple. Across Queensland landmarks in Brisbane, Caboolture, Redcliffe, Sandgate, Ipswich, Toowoomba and Townsville will light up purple.
